About Gustavo Juárez
Gustavo Juárez was born in
1982 in San Lucas Tolimán, Guatemala. He received artistic education in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. In 2013 he moved to Vienna, Austria, since 2021 he lives and works in
Innsbruck.
Earlier works treat sociopolitical questions in a critical way, most of all the recent history of Guatemala: the decades-long civil war and its lack of dealing with it on a political, societal and judicial level. His migration changed his work fundamentally. During various years he concentrated on utopist paintings of dreams, turning to fantastic realism. These works combine utopist with realistic, abstract with concrete elements and appear to be colorful and happy at first sight. In recent years the multifaceted artist experimented with different materials, techniques and forms of expression. Gradually he (re-)turns to critical art and contemporary art.
